Reminder From A Recent European Meeting Highlights Heart Failure As A Major Cause Of Mortality and Morbidity In Diabetic Patients

In my opinion, the entire health care system is failing to get to the root cause of CV disease, whether it is cholesterol/lipid related, diabetes or obesity- it is diet and weight/adiposity; it is metabolic.  Our society is calorically overloaded with very poor nutritional status.  We do need to monitor all the outcomes as we forge ahead with therapies but what we (patients and doctors/health care providers)  really need to do is address our lack of understanding about nutrition and our inadequacies to address root cause. For health optimal nutritional status is critical!

Having said that, there have been many trials looking at outcomes using different classes of medications in treating high blood pressure, diabetes and coronary artery disease.  Some of our blood pressure medications are better at lowering risk of heart failure and renal disease in patients with diabetes.  Doctors have to deploy prescription decisions based on the profile of their patients, this is the art of medicine.
